Glasgow Terrace drying green.

Description

The drying green behind the Glasgow Terrace was used for communal washing by the tenants where, due to lack of electricity or gas, water was heated on open fires. Fishermen also used spaced or ‘greens’ to tend their nets and dry equipment between ventures.

The many fishing yards can be seen lining the harbour, such as Burgon’s yard (seen to the right) which remains a family business today, exporting seafood across the world.
